The Triune Brain Theory advocated by Paul MacLean, an American neuroscientist, states that there are three layers to the human brain, representing three stages of humanity’s evolution.
The oldest of them is the hind-brain or the brainstem (also known as the reptilian brain), which is responsible for breathing, excretion, blood flow, body temperature, and other autonomic functions.
Then there is the limbic-brain (or mammalian brain), which encircles the top of the brainstem. This is the seat of emotions.
The third and the latest part is the cerebral cortex in the forebrain, which is the seat of reason and willpower. This part (also known as the prefrontal cortex) is what makes humans different from other vertebrates; for it is most fully developed in human beings.
That’s why why in EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) we tap on top of the head – along with affirmations – for therein lies the limbic-brain / the seat of emotions. Similarly, tapping above eyebrows wakes up the will-power.
If you wish to activate your brain, tapping all over your head is a great exercise. You may also choose the area you particularly wish to activate. For example, if you wish to improve your bodily functions, tap at the back of the head; if you wish to improve your emotional intelligence, tap on the top of your head; and if you wish to strengthen your willpower and reasoning power, tap on the front of your head, including the forehead.Massage therapy has a deeper effect.
Gratitude Therapy
The practice of ‘gratitude’ or ‘thankfulness’ promises to combat depression, increasing wellbeing and happiness, while opening our eyes to all the positive factors that are already around us.
